Background of the Study

Effective pain management in pediatric care is essential for improving the quality of life and promoting healing. Unfortunately, pain management in children is often suboptimal, particularly in resource-constrained settings like Kaduna State. Challenges such as insufficient training of healthcare providers, lack of pain assessment tools, and the availability of pediatric analgesics contribute to the poor management of pediatric pain (Ogunleye et al., 2023).

This review will explore the challenges pediatric nurses and healthcare workers face in managing pain in children in Kaduna State, particularly in public healthcare facilities. The review will focus on the barriers to effective pain management and identify potential strategies for improving pediatric pain care.

Statement of the Problem

Pediatric pain, if inadequately managed, can lead to long-term physical and psychological consequences. Despite the availability of effective pain management techniques, pediatric pain is frequently under-treated in many parts of Kaduna State due to challenges such as inadequate pain assessment, lack of appropriate medications, and healthcare provider attitudes toward pain management.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the challenges faced by healthcare providers in managing pediatric pain in Kaduna State.
  2. To assess the level of knowledge and training of pediatric nurses in pain management practices.
  3. To recommend strategies for improving pediatric pain management in healthcare settings in Kaduna State.

Research Questions

  1. What challenges do healthcare providers in Kaduna State face in managing pediatric pain?
  2. What is the level of knowledge and training of pediatric nurses in pain management?
  3. What strategies can be implemented to improve pediatric pain management practices in the state?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Pediatric pain is inadequately managed in Kaduna State due to insufficient resources, training, and tools.
  2. Lack of knowledge and proper training among pediatric nurses is a major barrier to effective pediatric pain management.
  3. Improved training programs and access to pediatric analgesics will enhance the quality of pediatric pain management in Kaduna State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This review will focus on pediatric pain management in public and private healthcare facilities in Kaduna State. It will examine the challenges faced by healthcare providers, particularly pediatric nurses, in providing effective pain management. Limitations may include access to healthcare facilities and potential biases in reporting pain management practices.

Definitions of Terms

  • Pediatric Pain Management: The assessment and treatment of pain in children, using age-appropriate methods.
  • Analgesics: Medications used to relieve pain.
